The Victorian Government has selected a joint venture between Coleman Rail and KBR as the contractors to complete stage two of the Shepparton line upgrade.
Coleman Rail and KBR will be responsible for delivering critical infrastructure for the VLocity trains travelling to and from Shepparton.
The Government has invested $356 million for the first two stages of the project with stage one already allowing ten additional weekly services for the line.
- Platforms will be extended at Mooroopna, Murchison East and Nagambie stations to accommodate for the longer VLocity trains.
- A new stabling facility will be built in an industrial area north of Shepparton Station.
- Fifty-nine level crossings will be upgraded between Donnybrook and Shepparton to boost safety for road users and train passengers.
- An extension to the crossing loop near Murchison East will be added to enable trains to pass each other, improving reliability on the line.
Minister for Transport Infrastructure, Jacinta Allan said the Shepparton Line is a vitally important part of Victoria’s regional train network and that “it will give Shepparton passengers the modern and reliable trains they’ve been calling for and provide more services more often.”
The upgrades to the Shepparton Line are designed to maximise benefits to passengers while minimising disruptions to the service.
For example, the VLocity train is the newest in the V/Line fleet and features mobile signal boosters for phone coverage and improved accessibility for passengers with prams and mobility aids.
Member for Northern Victoria, Mark Gepp stated that the project would improve reliability and make journeys more comfortable for passengers.
“This upgrade is giving Shepparton residents access to modern transport infrastructure and making it easier than ever to enjoy the comfort of travelling by train. Drivers will also see the benefits of the level crossing upgrades, which will make crossing the line much safer for motorists,” Mr Geep said.
The joint venture between Coleman Rail and KBR will begin early works soon, including site investigations, industry engagement and design work.
Stage two of the Shepparton Line Upgrade is scheduled for completion in late 2022.
