Victoria’s South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication Stage 2 is progressing with the Victorian Government asking for Expressions of Interest from contractors to deliver this monumental project.
The South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication project is part of the $1 billion investment on the staged upgrade to the Geelong Line.
Once complete, the project will deliver more frequent and reliable train services for commuters in South Geelong, Marshal and Waurn Ponds and support local jobs.
The main scope of the project involves duplicating eight kilometres of track between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds. There will also be further upgrades at South Geelong and Marshall station including second platforms and accessible pedestrian overpasses.
Other works include removing level crossings at Fyan Street and Surf Coast Highway; and signalling upgrades between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds. A business case will also be conducted to determine a solution to upgrade the rail tunnel between Geelong and South Geelong stations.
The South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication will provide significant benefits to passengers including delivering five trains every hour at peak times between South Geelong, Marshall and Waurn Ponds.
Removing the congested level crossings at multiple stations means less waiting time at boom gates, increased road safety and the opportunity for paths, landscaping and community amenities.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack commented on the project by saying: “It is exciting to see this important project out to market, bringing us one step closer to delivering critical upgrades to boost the number of train services on the Geelong Line and help create jobs.”
Stage one of the South Geelong to Waurn Pond Duplication will be underway in the next couple of weeks, including a new platform, accessible overpass and track duplication at Waurn Ponds station.
Early works have already involved local businesses including Norris Construction Group and R Slater & Sons.
The duplication project will also include a stage 3, which will involve upgrading the 400-metre-long rail tunnel between Geelong and South Geelong to deliver more trains along the line.
The South Geelong to Waurn Pond Duplication will be a significant piece of infrastructure for Geelong. Geelong’s population is expected to grow by almost 50 per cent in the next 30 years. The Geelong Line is the busiest line of Victoria’s regional network and has doubled in commuters since 2009.
Stage two of the duplication project will kick off in 2022; you can express your interest to deliver the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Stage 2 here. Expressions of Interest will close in March 2021.
