Downer Group has been awarded a $245 million contract by ElectraNet Pty Ltd for developments of the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia.

The multi-million-dollar project includes upgrading the existing transmission network at the peninsula and upgrading substations.

This contract follows Downer's Early Contract Involvement, which included preliminary design work and critical procurement activities.

The Project Scope

Construction on the Eyre Peninsula project is expected to take up to 20 months to complete before it becomes fully operational, with work starting at the end of this month.

Downer's contract for the Eyre Peninsula Link includes:

  • Detailed design and construction of a new 262-kilometre double circuit 132kV transmission line from Cultana to Port Lincoln via Yadnarie (with the ability to upgrade the Cultana to Yadnarie section to 275kV at a later date.)
  • Design, construction and commissioning the upgrades at five substations at Yadnarie, Cultana, Middleback, Wudinna and Port Lincoln.

Downer's Executive General Manager for Infrastructure Projects, Mark Mackay, commented on the project win.

"I am pleased with our involvement in such a critical infrastructure project, set to improve the power security and reliability to Eyre Peninsula households and businesses.

"We are excited to continue to apply Downer's expansive experience, and knowledge in the construction of high voltage transmission line and substation works. Our capability is not only to provide system security to residents and businesses but ultimately, enable further growth and connection of renewable developments to the national power grid by the construction of additional capacity to the Eyre Peninsula," Mr Mackay said.

Once completed, the new transmission line and upgraded substations will prove a more secure and reliable power supply to homes and businesses in the Eyre Peninsula.

The project will also increase the electricity network's capacity to accommodate more users, enable a new renewable network, and provide job opportunities and positive economic activity to the local community.

The Eyre Peninsula Link project is expected to be completed and operational by late 2022.
