The platforms are part of Australia’s largest commuter hub, which currently has 270,000 commuters pass through every day. This is expected to grow to 450,000 in the next 20 years.
Work will begin on the project immediately and will include the construction of a 19-metre tunnel, renewal of Central Station, construction of two new metro stations, and a new feature roof for the Northern Concourse.
These works will result in platforms 13 and 14 closing during construction.
Managing Director of Laing O’Rourke Cathal O’Rourke spoke about this major project, stating, “We have a strong track record in complex transport precincts around the world – and with this experience we have assembled a team who will deliver a world-class result for the NSW Government, the people of Sydney and the businesses and customers who rely on Central every day,”
“Our recent experience delivering the $100 million upgrade of Wynyard Station allowed us to develop construction techniques that will ensure minimal disruption throughout the life of the project. The station needs to be kept running, and its history and heritage protected, as we also upgrade it to the modern transport solution Metro offers.”
This $955 million contract is part of the $11.5 billion Sydney Metro stage 2 which will run from Chatswood to Sydenham via the CBD and onto Bankstown in the west.
According to Transport Minister Andrew Constance said the $955 million project, along with the rest of the Metro project, will be paid for through the government’s “asset recycling program.”
Mr Constance also spoke about the significance of this project, stating, “This is the start of Central’s long-awaited renewal, bringing new entrances and simpler interchanges that will make life so much easier for customers.
“Central Station is the gateway to our great city, and we are working to develop a station that blends heritage with innovative design on par with other grand stations around the world.
“Labour failed to deliver Sydney Metro after promising it five times over 16 years in office. Next year, the NSW Government will open the revolutionary Sydney Metro in North West Sydney – transforming the daily commute for Sydneysiders forever.”
The project is expected to be completed by 2022, this will come two years before stage 2 of the Sydney Metro opens in 2024.
