- Bruce Highway Upgrade—Mackay Ring Road and Cooroy to Curra projects added to the Infrastructure Priority List
- The Australian Government is contributing up to $448 million towards the Mackay Ring Road and up to $307.4 million towards the Cooroy to Curra Section C Projects
- Announced Monday
Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester has welcomed the addition of the Bruce Highway Upgrade—Mackay Ring Road and Cooroy to Curra projects to Infrastructure Australia's (IA) Infrastructure Priority List (IPL) as Priority Projects, as part of the Australian Government's commitment of up to $6.7 billion over ten years for upgrades along the length of the Bruce Highway.
The government has committed funding towards 15 of the 18 projects on the updated IPL, including in Queensland:
- $914 million for the Gateway Upgrade North project,
- $200 million for the Ipswich Motorway (Rocklea to Darra) project,
- $110 million to the M1 Mudgeeraba to Varsity Lakes upgrade and
- $105 million for the M1 Gateway Motorway Merge project
The Bruce Highway is a critical transport corridor for Queensland, which was first assessed by IA in 2012. As individual projects have been further developed, they have been brought forward for assessment by IA.
Mr Chester said IA had now completed its assessments of the business cases and deemed them priority projects on the Infrastructure Priority List.
“The addition of these two significant projects to the Priority List further supports the Australian Government's decision to invest in these crucial upgrades,” Mr Chester said.
“Upgrading the Bruce Highway is part of our commitment to improve road safety and reduce the national road toll and I welcome IA's tick of approval for the Mackay Ring Road—Stage 1 project. The Australian Government has committed up to $448 million towards delivering the project, which will address capacity constraints and increase the safety and freight efficiency of the region's road network by removing heavy vehicle traffic from the Mackay City Centre and residential areas.
“Construction of the Mackay Ring Road—Stage 1 project is due to start in the middle of the year and is scheduled for completion by early 2020, weather permitting.
“Likewise, the addition of the Cooroy to Curra Section C project to the Priority List underlines the importance of our commitment of up to $307.4 million towards the project. The inclusion of these projects on the Infrastructure Priority List demonstrates the important work undertaken by IA in prioritising nationally significant infrastructure. I look forward to working with IA in the future as we work towards planning and building Australia's infrastructure network.”
