In Western Australia, the single biggest road infrastructure project ever undertaken in the State is well underway. The Gateway WA is a $1 billion dollar project which will expand the existing sections of highway and allow connectivity between the Perth Airport, industrial centres in Kewdale and Forrestfield, as well as providing much needed decreases in congestion for commuters and commercial vehicles.
The project is being jointly funded by the State and Federal Governments, pledging $317.5 million and $686.4 million respectively. The project is broken into three areas; the northern, southern and western zones, and includes a vast range of efficiency and safety improvements. Graded interchanges will be built at certain key points along the stretch of highway allowing intersecting traffic to flow above the main highway route, as well as the expansion of road capacity along the Leach Highway and the Tonkin/Roe Highway. The Gateway project also includes the construction of noise reducing amenity walls and a dedicated pedestrian & bike path which will stretch over 21km when the project is complete. Admirable environmental efforts are also being made within the project scope, with revegetation already underway in areas that were cleared for the project, using endangered plants, many of which were saved at the time of site clearing for future replanting.
Late last year, the Gateway project reached a milestone in the Leach Highway – Tonkin Highway graded interchange with the instalment of 24 reinforced concrete beams forming the skeleton of the structure, and progress continues to be made with this interchange as well as many other areas in the project zones. Traffic along this route has been projected to double in the next 20 years and the construction of this massive infrastructure upgrade will allow Perth's economic growth to increase accordingly. The route has been identified as significant by Infrastructure Australia as part of their Competitive International Gateways Project, and as such, the new Perth Gateway is set to improve trade performance for Australia nationwide.
