Port Hedland port capacity Construction Details

With the key Pillbara region port of Port Hedland approaching capacity due to increasing freight demands, the project involves expanding the capabilities of the facility. This might include the following elements:

  • recalibrating the usage of existing infrastructure
  • implementing major upgrades to the facilities
  • building new port infrastructure and assets
  • sourcing and developing new land for port-related activities

Consideration should be given to charging users of port facilities as a component of the funding model.

Port Hedland port capacity Jobs & Community Plan

The Pilbara region in Western Australia is home to a number of spodumene (lithium) projects, the lithium outputs from which are utilised in the fast-growing energy storage, electric vehicle and consumer electronics industries. Additionally, it is projected that the beef and agri business sectors of the region will continue to grow their overseas export market. Capacity of the port facility at Port Hedland is likely to reach capacity, especially when coupled with the growing demand for general cargo services. Delivery of the proposed capacity also offers the opportunity to lessen the demands on road freight by reducing the reliance on trucking freight to and from Perth. The potential for increased economic growth through natural resources (for example, lithium) in the North of Australia has been acknowledged by the 2019 Australian Infrastructure Audit.
