Queensland National Land Transport Network maintenance Jobs & Community Plan

The current state of many of Queensland roads is very poor, which has the following impacts on the surrounding communities and the freight industry:

  • increased costs
  • increased travel times
  • decreased safety levels
  • a reduced resilience of the road network itself

The road segment of the NLTN in Queensland has a large backlog. Consisting of around 5,000 km of streets, 940 bridges and 1,260 significant culverts, the network accommodates around 50% of all Queensland's state-controlled street traffic. The following components of the NLTN have been identified as requiring attention:

  • approximately 885 km of the system as 'high priority' for upkeep or restoration
  • approximately 340 km of pavement requiring urgent maintenance
  • approximately 546 km of pavement require restoration

The cost of these works is estimated to spike significantly if not dealt with now, according to the Queensland Government. This activity aligns with the National Road Maintenance Strategy, highlighted as a High Priority Initiative within the Infrastructure Priority List.
