South Coast Highway improvements Albany to Esperance Jobs & Community Plan
The South Coast Highway serves as a key connection for regional towns and services the Esperance and Albany port facilities. It is an important freight and tourism route which suffers from poor design and deteriorating condition. This results in escalating maintenance and operating costs, coupled with safety concerns. Significant sections of the Highway are aged and require upgrade:
- eight timber bridges which are nearly 60 years old
- approximately 348 km or 74% of the Highway has 40 year old pavement
As the population grows and demands on the Highway increase due to tourism and freight volumes, the condition of the road will continue to erode if not addressed in a timely manner.
