QCoal has awarded Thiess a $480 million contract extension to continue operations at their Northern Hub mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin.

QCoal’s Northern Hub includes the Sonoma, Sonoma North, Jax and Drake mines. Under the four year contract, Thiess will continue to provide mining services at all four of these mines.

The scope of works that Thiess will undertake as part of the contract includes mine planning, drill and blast, overburden removal and coal mining.

CIMIC Groups chief executive officer, Michael Wright has spoken about this major contract.

“Thiess has a long-standing partnership with QCoal and the Thiess team has provided expert planning and optimum mine sequencing to deliver consistent outcomes for our client. This extension builds on our relationship with QCoal and enables us to drive greater efficiencies at the project.”

Douglas Thompson, Thiess’ Managing Director, has also spoken about the contract.

“We’re proud to continue our work at the QCoal Northern Hub where we have a proven track record of delivering innovative and low-cost mining solutions. We also look forward to continuing our strong relationship with the Collinsville community with whom we have worked closely with for more than 20 years.”

This contract follows last week’s news that BHP had awarded Thiess a $225 million contract to continue mining services at their Rocky’s Reward nickel mine in Western Australia.
