Construction of WestConnex, which the City of Sydney Council has recently estimated to cost over $45 billion, is fast approaching the halfway mark as we near the end of 2018.
With work on the M4 Widening and King Georges Road Interchange already complete, the New South Wales project is now close to finishing off work on the M4 East.
While the major project is nearing its halfway mark, there is still plenty of work to be done.
The New M5 is on track to be completed by mid-2020, while the mammoth task of building the M4-M5 Link Tunnels and Rozelle Interchange will be completed by 2024.
The project is now estimated to deliver over 12,000 jobs by completion, while significantly easing congestion, connecting communities, and offering more reliable routes.
Below is a breakdown of WestConnex activities:
M4 Widening - 100% Complete
This project saw the existing M4 Motorway from Parramatta to Homebush widened from three to four lanes in each direction. This project offered 2000 jobs.
King Georges Road Interchange Upgrade - 100% Complete
This involved an upgrade of the King Georges Road Interchange,a well-known bottleneck for south-western motorists, between the M5 West Motorway and the M5 East Motorway at Beverly Hills, in preparation for the New M5 project. This project offered 900 jobs.
M4 East - 94% Complete - Due for completion by mid 2019
Extending the M4 Motorway in tunnels between Homebush and Haberfield via Concord. It is the first underground section of WestConnex. It will connect to the widened M4 and extend it via twin motorway tunnels from Homebush to Haberfield with three lanes in each direction. The M4 East will alleviate the frustrating delays and gridlock that motorists face daily when they come off the M4 and hit a standstill on Parramatta Road. This project is delivering around 4000 jobs through to completion.
New M5 - 67% Complete - Due for completion by mid 2020
Duplicating the M5 East from King Georges Road Interchange Upgrade at Beverly Hills to a new interchange at St Peters. The New M5 will provide twin underground motorway tunnels, nine kilometres long, from Kingsgrove to a new St Peters Interchange at the site of the old Alexandria landfill facility. This project is delivering around 4,400 jobs through to completion.
M4-M5 Link Tunnels - 41% Complete - Due for completion by mid 2023
This project, still in the planning phase, will deliver twin 7.5 km tunnels that will connect the New M4 at Haberfield and the New M5 at St Peters.
M4-M5 Link Rozelle Interchange - 38% Complete - Due for completion by late 2023
This project, still in the planning phase, has been pinned as the most complex stage of the M4-M5 Link connecting to the surrounding road network and future Western Harbour Tunnel via underground tunnels. It will include an underground tunnel from the Rozelle Interchange to Victoria Road near Iron Cove Bridge, known as the ‘Iron Cove Link’.
