Fortescue and Liebherr sign landmark $2.8 billion deal for zero-emission mining equipment

The Australian mining industry is on the brink of a sustainable revolution. On September 24, 2024, Fortescue Metals Group and Liebherr announced a monumental partnership at MINExpo in Las Vegas, unveiling plans to develop and deploy zero-emission mining equipment on an unprecedented scale.

This historic US$2.8 billion agreement marks the largest equipment deal in Liebherr's 75-year history and represents a significant stride toward carbon-free mining operations. The partnership includes the delivery of 475 zero-emission Liebherr machines to Fortescue's mining sites in Western Australia. This fleet comprises approximately 360 autonomous battery-electric trucks, 55 electric excavators, and 60 battery-powered dozers.

Central to this initiative is the integration of Fortescue Zero's cutting-edge battery power system into Liebherr's heavy machinery, paving the way for a complete zero-emission mining ecosystem by 2030. Notably, the battery technology and the Autonomous Haulage Solution (AHS) co-developed by both companies are designed to be scalable and provide reliable, ongoing energy efficiency. They can be retrofitted onto existing Liebherr haul trucks, effectively future-proofing current investments.

Incorporating zero-emission mining equipment into operations will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of mining companies while also minimising greenhouse gas emissions, positioning the industry at the forefront of sustainable practices.

iseekplant CEO Drew McPherson highlighted the importance of this deal and its potential impact on the Australian mining industry.

"As we've observed at iseekplant, there's been a significant uptick in demand driven by renewables projects, particularly in wind and solar farms, alongside increased activity in the battery and tech metal mining sectors. This surge aligns with the global shift towards cleaner energy and the need for sustainable mining practices. One of Australia's key competitive advantages is that we are the greenest and leanest miners in the world. This landmark deal between Twiggy Forrest’s Fortescue and Liebherr will position us as a leader in responsible mineral extraction and make Australia highly attractive to buyers seeking to source minerals in the cleanest, most sustainable way possible."
